Leaded painted and stained glass panel
2011
This is a replica of part of a window from St Deny’s Church in York. It is a method of glass painting called smear painting. The shadow that you can see on the underside and wings of the bird are applied before the rest of the painting. This means you need to paint on top of the shadowing. Glass painting is very unforgiving – once you have applied the paint it is very difficult if nigh impossible to apply paint over the top. This means that every line has to be perfect. I attempted this painting 27 times before I got it right. It remains the best glass painting I have ever done.
